Felling storm damaged trees on a wildfire prevention project

Our crew at work felling hazardous trees that were damaged by a storm. This work was done as part of a larger wildfire prevention project.

Miles and Jonah take turns climbing to remove the remainder of a damaged stem from a Monterey cypress tree. We responded to an emergency call at the beginning of the week to take off the hung up, broken top and returned two days later to remove the rest of the stem at the homeowners request. The damage was determined to have weakened the stem severely and the wound from the broken top was too substantial to be sealed over by the tree’s tissue regeneration. We made the call to remove the stem.

Our customer wanted this tree removed to created a fire break in his backyard. Additionally, the tree had a central union with deep included bark, a phenomenon that occurs when the bark in between a split tree union grows in between the two stems creating a weak joint. This made the tree at risk of falling and splitting apart. This was further proven when we found decay in the lower trunk near the uniWe processed the whole tree into firewood for the customers and stacked it neatly on his trail.
